Fuelre4m, a UK-based company, has announced the national rollout of its groundbreaking Re4mx fuel-conditioning technology across over 200 sites, following three years of rigorous real-world testing. The impressive results of this technology have shown a significant reduction in fuel consumption, with up to 20 percent less fuel used, and a substantial decrease in emissions, with up to 23 percent fewer emissions from fuel burned. The innovative solution, which is added directly to fuel onboard, enhances the combustion efficiency of existing fuels without requiring any changes to ship infrastructure, ensuring seamless results without downtime. Fuelre4m’s Re4mx technology has been widely adopted across maritime operations globally, and the company is now set to bring this solution to the cruise industry. In an exclusive interview with Cruise Industry News, Rob Mortimer, CEO of Fuelre4m, shared his insights on the company’s journey and the benefits of this revolutionary technology.
“Somebody came to me with a little bottle of yellow liquid and said, ‘Put this into your fuel tank. It’ll make the engine work better, reduce fuel consumption and make the fuel smell better. It did what he said,”
Mortimer recalled the moment that sparked the creation of Fuelre4m’s Re4mx technology, which began six years ago when he was working on a hybrid generator. The test results were so impressive that they led to the purchase of the technology by the company that produced it, and the rest is history. According to Mortimer, the solution will have a profound impact on the cruise industry, enabling it to drastically cut down emissions and consumption. “You have a very big industry with lots of big consumers. You can make a big difference very quickly,”
he said. “With all the regulations coming in, (cruise companies) are being forced to make choices on technology that’s not ready,”
he added. However, Mortimer emphasized that the solution offers a way to immediately comply with regulations, such as those set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). “You can buy another three or five years … You can just drop this in and be better than compliant with all the IMO regulations straight away through 2030,”
he said. So, how does the solution work? Mortimer explained that the more fuel that is combusted in the engine, the less uncombusted fuel is released into the exhaust, creating emissions.
- Typically, about 75 percent of fuel combusts, and 25 percent goes to the exhaust.
- If you had 100 percent combustion, you wouldn’t get the emissions.
- We make sure that more is converting to push the piston.
Mortimer emphasized that the solution is not about making changes to the fuel or technology, but rather about reforming the fuel to produce more power.
Fuelre4m’s Re4mx technology is a fossil fuel reformer that enhances the combustion efficiency of existing fuels without requiring any changes to ship infrastructure.
Mortimer also highlighted the importance of understanding the relationship between fuel and equipment monitoring, stating that there is a lack of understanding in this area.
Monitoring fuel combustion and its effects on equipment is crucial for optimal performance and efficiency.
The company’s biggest process is teaching companies about fuel combustion and how to monitor it correctly, Mortimer added. Looking forward, Mortimer said that the solution has been tested on vessels, and the company is considering companies moving towards biofuel, as its product works well in those.
Biofuel refers to fuels produced from organic matter, such as plants, algae, or agricultural waste.
Dual-fuel engines are engines that can run on both conventional fossil fuels and biofuels.
The company is waiting to see which companies are interested in engaging with this solution, and Mortimer emphasized that the solution has the potential to make a significant impact on the cruise industry. “We’re waiting to see which companies are interested in engaging,”
he said. The rollout of Fuelre4m’s Re4mx technology marks a significant milestone in the company’s journey, and the potential benefits for the cruise industry are substantial.
Key Benefits of Fuelre4m’s Re4mx Technology
- Up to 20 percent reduction in fuel consumption
